Lacerations from broken glassware are common laboratory injuries. However,
most injuries from broken glass can be avoided by adhering to the following procedures:
- Handle and store laboratory glassware with care to avoid
damage and injury
- Before you use or move any glassware, inspect it carefully
for chips and cracks; dispose of chipped, cracked, or badly etched glass
- Stay clear of glassware being heated; if it is necessary to
handle heated glassware, use tongs or heat-resistant gloves
- Adequate hand protection should be used when inserting glass
tubing into rubber stoppers or corks, or rubber tubing on glass hose connections
- Vacuum-jacketed glass apparatus should be handled with
extreme care.
