Radiation Labels

Facilities are required to label all containers of licensed radioactive materials. The label must be clearly visible and include the standard radiation symbol and the words “Caution, Radioactive Material” or “Danger, Radioactive Material.”

Labels must contain enough information to permit individuals handling or using the containers, or working in the vicinity of the material, to take the appropriate precautions to eliminate or minimize exposures. This information may include the name of the radionuclide(s) present, an estimate of the quantity of radioactivity, the date for which the activity is estimated, radiation levels, and the kinds of compounds present.
