Radiation Signs

If the amount of radioactive material stored or used exceeds 10 times the quantity specified in Appendix C of 10 CFR for the particular licensed material, warning signs must be posted. At a minimum, signs will include the standard, three-bladed radiation caution symbol and the words “Caution, Radioactive Material(s).”

In addition to this posting requirement, caution signs with specific wording must be used for each of the following radiation areas:

  • Radiation Area: "Caution, Radiation Area"
  • High Radiation Area: "Caution, High Radiation Area", or
    "Danger, High Radiation Area"
  • Very High Radiation Area: "Grave Danger, Very High Radiation Area"
  • Airborne Radioactivity Area: "Caution, Airborne Radioactivity Area", or "Danger, Airborne Radioactivity Area"
