More General Radiation Safety Practices

  • Follow all procedures observed at the laboratory for entry to or exit from areas containing radioactive material. Individuals working with or near radioactive materials with a potential for contact should monitor their hands, feet, and clothing before leaving the laboratory area. Personnel monitoring (e.g., frisking) can be done using hand-held survey instruments and should be done each time the individual leaves the laboratory.
  • Equipment must also be surveyed for contamination before removal from laboratories where radioactive materials are used. Wipe tests and surveys using hand-held instruments can be used to identify equipment contamination.
