Types of Radiation

Ionizing type radiation is potentially more harmful than non-ionizing. Radioactive sources may emit alpha, beta or x-ray /gamma types of ionizing radiation.

Non-ionizing radiation is electromagnetic waves of energy that transfer the energy into material. This energy causes the molecules to vibrate and produce heat (as in a microwave oven).

Listed below are some examples of radiation sources in a laboratory.

Ionizing Radiation
  • Radioactive isotopes
  • X-ray devices
  • Sealed sources in equipment
Non-Ionizing Radiation
  • Lasers
  • Microwaves
  • Ultraviolet
