Evaluating Hazardous Components of a Mixture
Mixture Evaluation Hazard Determination
If a mixture has been tested as a whole to determine its hazards, the results shall be used. If a mixture has not been tested as a whole:
  • The mixture is assumed to present health hazards of
the components that comprise 1% or greater of
    the mixture (0.1% for carcinogens)
  • Evaluation may be performed using any available scientifically
    valid data.
If any component present in the mixture in concentrations of less than 1% (or less than 0.1% for carcinogens) could, upon release, exceed the concentrations established in OSHA's permissible exposure limits (PELs), or the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist's (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), or present a health hazard, the mixture shall be assumed to present the same hazard.
