Hearing Conservation Program - Evaluation of audiograms |
|||
Annual audiograms
must be routinely compared to baseline audiograms to determine whether the audiogram is
accurate and whether the employee has lost hearing ability (i.e., to determine whether a
standard threshold shift (STS) has occurred). An STS is defined in the Hearing
Conservation Amendment as an average shift (or loss) in either ear of 10 dBA or more at
the 2,000, 3,000, and 4,000-Hertz (Hz) frequencies. An effective program depends on a uniform definition of an STS. OSHA chose to compute STS by using an average of the hearing loss across the three frequencies. This method reduces the number of people incorrectly identified with STS. |
