Wiring Methods and Components - Conductors for General Wiring

Temporary or permanent conductors can create shock and fire hazards that usually can be prevented through insulation. Insulating material should be the appropriate composition and thickness as rated for:
  • Voltage the conductor will carry
  • Current the conductor will carry
  • Temperature extremes and other environmental factors
  • Location of the conductor.

Insulated conductors must also be easily identifiable, color coding is most often used. The colors to be used are:

Other types of circuit wires may be any color except those listed above.
