Description of Earth Returns

Earth returns use the earth to provide a current path back to the supply source. This is done by implanting a grounding electrode at the equipment being served and connecting the equipment to the ungrounded conductor and to the grounding electrode. Since one side of the supply source is also connected to ground through a grounding electrode, a return path exists; however, its effectiveness is dependent on varying soil conditions. The graphic to below shows an earth return, which is not allowed, in contrast to a proper return system
