Wiring Methods and Components - Temporary Wiring

This page and the next one describe general requirements for temporary wiring conditions.
  • Feeders shall originate in an approved distribution center. The conductors shall be run as multi-conductor cord or cable assemblies, or they may be run as open conductors or insulators not more than 10 feet apart if they will not be subject to physical damage.
  • Branch circuits shall originate in an approved power outlet or panelboard. Conductors shall be open conductors or multi-conductor cord or cable assemblies. If run as open conductors, branch circuits shall be fastened at ceiling height every 10 feet. No branch- circuit conductor may be laid on the floor, and each branch circuit that supplies receptacles or fixed equipment shall contain a separate equipment grounding conductor.
  • Receptacles used in temporary wiring circuits must provide a connection for an equipment grounding conductor. Unless the receptacle is supplied by a metallic raceway that provides a continuous grounding path back to the source, a separate equipment grounding conductor must be placed in the branch circuit. There must be good electrical connection between the receptacle grounding terminal and the equipment grounding conductor.
