When using wire rope slings, a margin of safety can be provided by inspecting
for early signs of failure. Slings should be discarded if they show:
- Localized wear (shiny worn spots) on the outside
- A one-third reduction in outer wire diameter
- Excessive wear, damage, or displacement of end fittings hooks, rings, links, or
collars by overload or misapplication
- Distortion, kinking, bird
caging, or other evidence of damage to the wire rope structure
- Ten randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, or five broken wires in one
strand in one rope lay
- Evidence of heat damage
- Hooks that have been opened more than 15 percent of the normal throat opening measured
at the narrowest point or twisted more than 10 degrees from the plane of the unbent hook
- Corrosion of the rope or end attachment.
