SLING SAFETY

Types of Slings - Introduction

This section, based on 29 CFR 1910.184, describes the regulations for hoisting slings. The sling topics and types covered are listed on the left.

The dominant sling characteristics are determined by the components of that sling. For example, the strengths and weaknesses of a wire rope sling are essentially the same as the strengths and weaknesses of the wire rope of which it is made.

Factors that should be taken into consideration when choosing the best sling for a job include the size, weight, shape, temperature, sensitivity of the material to be moved, and environmental conditions under which the sling will be used.
