Portable Fire Extinguishers - Introduction

The requirements of CFR 1910.157 apply to the placement, use, maintenance, and testing of portable fire extinguishers provided for employee use. This section of the module is based on this regulation and will cover the topics listed to the left.

The selection and distribution requirements of 1910.157 do not apply to extinguishers provided for employee use on the outside of workplace buildings or structures. Only the inspection, maintenance, and testing requirements of this section are applicable if all of the following are true:

Extinguishers are provided but not intended for employee use

The employer has an emergency action plan and a fire prevention plan which meet the requirements of CFR 1910.38.

CFR 1910.157 does not require employees to use extinguishers.
