Listed below are procedures to follow when inspecting or working in
a laboratory with fume hoods:
- Do not disturb any procedure or equipment in use by other
personnel under a fume hood; do not create excess air currents if laboratory personnel are
using the fume hood
- Always wear appropriate personal protective clothing when
working near a fume hood
- When working with hoods that have adjustable sashes, make
sure the sash is at the proper height (the height should be marked on the front of the
hood)
- Do not turn the fume hood off for any reason
- Always clean the work area of a fume hood when finished.
Return chemicals to their proper storage area
- Keep exhaust slots clear of chemicals and other materials.
Do not use the hood for storage because it reduces the hood's ability to contain air
contaminants
- Notify the laboratory supervisor if it appears that the hood
is not functioning properly.
