Hepatitis B Vaccination and Past Exposure Evaluation and Follow-Up

A confidential medical evaluation and follow-up must be made available to employees following an exposure incident. An exposure incident is a specific eye, mouth, other mucous membrane, non-intact skin, or parenteral contact with blood or OPIM that results from the performance of an employee's duties.

The evaluation and follow-up procedures must include:
  • Documenting the circumstances of exposure
  • Identifying and testing the source individual if feasible
  • Testing the exposed employee's blood if he/she consents
  • Post-exposure prophylaxis
  • Counseling
  • Evaluation of reported illnesses.
Following the post-exposure evaluation, the health care professional must provide a written opinion to the employer. This opinion is limited to a statement that the employee has been informed of the need, if any, for further evaluation or treatment. All other findings are confidential. The employer must provide a copy of the written opinion to the employee within 15 days of the evaluation.
