Threshold Limit Values

Now that we have covered the types of air contaminants and their measurements, it is now important to cover airborne concentration limitations. Threshold limit values (TLVs) have been established for airborne concentrations of many chemical compounds. It is important to understand something about TLVs and the terminology in which their concentrations are expressed.

The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) publishes annually a list of "Threshold Limit Values and Biological Exposure Indices".

The lists are reviewed annually and values are updated as relative data becomes available. The ACGIH is not an official government agency. Membership is limited to professional personnel in government agencies or educational institutions engaged in occupational safety and health programs.
