Routes of Entry

In order for a harmful agent to exert its toxic effect, it must enter the body and come into contact with a body cell. Chemical compounds in the form of liquids, gases, mists, dusts, fumes, and vapors can cause problems by inhalation (breathing), absorption (through direct contact with the skin), or ingestion (eating or drinking).
