CHEMICAL HAZARD COMMUNICATION COMPLIANCE

.

Becoming Familiar with the Rule

There are two types of work operations on which the Hazard Communication Standard provides limited coverage. These are laboratories and operations where chemicals are only handled in sealed containers (e.g., a warehouse). The limited provisions for these workplaces can be found in paragraph (b), scope and application.

Basically, employers having these types of work operations need to only:

  • Keep labels on containers as they are received
  • Maintain and provide employee access to material safety data sheets that are received
  • Provide information and training for employees.

The employers conducting these work operations do not need to have written hazard communication programs or lists of chemicals for these types of operations.
