Internally, acetylene cylinders are not designed like other kinds of
compressed gas cylinders. Acetylene cylinders are never hollow. These cylinders contain a
porous, calcium silicate filler and a suitable solvent,
usually acetone, because, under pressure, acetylene by itself is unstable. Acetone is used because it has the ability to absorb over 400 times its own volume of acetylene at 70º F. To learn more about the use of calcium silicate in cylinders, click on the term below. |
