Oxygen-Fuel Gas Welding and Cutting - General Requirements |
|||
General Requirements of Oxygen-Fuel Gas Welding and Cutting, 29 CFR 1910.253,
focuses on using acetylene safely. Under no conditions shall acetylene be generated, piped (except in approved cylinder manifolds), or utilized at a pressure in excess of 15 pounds per square inch gauge (psig) or 30 pounds per square inch absolute (psia). The 30 psia limit is intended to prevent unsafe use of acetylene in pressurized chambers such as caissons, underground excavations, or tunnel construction. Absolute pressure is equal to gauge pressure plus atmospheric pressure, which at sea level averages 14.7 pounds per square inch (psi). Thus, at sea level, a gauge pressure reading of 15 psi is equal to an absolute pressure of 29.7 psi. This requirement is not intended to apply to storage of acetylene dissolved in a suitable solvent in cylinders manufactured and maintained according to DOT requirements, or to acetylene for chemical use. |
