29 CFR 1910.147 Provisions - Energy Control Procedures

The shut down procedure must include the steps listed below. They should be performed in the order in which they are presented here.
  1. Prepare for shutdown.
  2. Shut down the machine(s) or equipment.
  3. Isolate the machine or equipment from the energy source(s).
  4. Apply the lockout or tagout device(s) to the energy- isolating device(s).
  5. Release safely all potentially hazardous stored or residual energy.
  6. Verify the isolation of the machine(s) or equipment prior to the start of service or maintenance work.
