CONTROL OF HAZARDOUS ENERGY

.

29 CFR 1910.147 Provisions - Energy Control Program

The purpose of the energy control program is to protect employees by requiring employers to establish a program which ensures that machines and equipment are isolated and inoperative before any employee performs service or maintenance where the unexpected energizing, start up, or release of stored energy could occur and cause injury.

Employers have the flexibility to develop a program and procedures that meet the needs of their particular workplace and the particular types of machines and equipment being maintained or serviced.

The lockout/tagout rule requires that the employer establish an energy control program that includes:
  • Documented energy control procedures
  • An employee training program
  • Periodic inspections of the procedures.
