Types of Slings - Wire Rope Slings

Wire rope slings are composed of individual wires twisted together to form strands. The strands are twisted around a core to form a rope. A fiber core is usually more flexible than a wire core. However, a wire core tends to be stronger and is more resistant to heat damage.

The term "lay" defines the type of wire rope and describes how the rope is made. Lay is used to refer to:
  • One complete wrap of a strand around the core
  • The direction the strands are wound around the core
  • The direction the wires are wound in the strands in relation to the direction of the strands around the core.
