SLING SAFETY

.

Use of Slings - Importance of the Operator

Slings should be selected carefully. The decision should be based on the sling’s intended use, the size and type of the load, sling characteristics, and the environmental conditions of the workplace.

A well-trained operator can prolong the service equipment life and reduce costs by avoiding the following: overloading equipment, operating at excessive speeds, taking up slack with a sudden jerk, and suddenly accelerating or decelerating equipment. The operator can look for the causes of sling damage and seek corrections whenever a danger exists.

If any accident involving materials movement occurs, the operator must immediately shut the equipment down and report it to a supervisor. The accident’s cause must be determined and corrected before resuming operations.

Operators should cooperate with co-workers and become a leader in carrying out safety measures to ensure worker safety, protect equipment, and maintain the production schedule.
