Crawler, Locomotive, and Truck Cranes - Operating Near Electric Lines

Conscious crane operation is important near overhead power lines. Before commencement of operations near electrical lines, the owners of the lines or their authorized representatives shall be notified and provided with all pertinent information.

Any overhead wire shall be considered to be an energized line until the owner of the line indicates that it is not an energized line.

The minimum clearance between energized lines and any part of the crane or load shall be 10 feet plus 4 inches for every 10 kV over 50 kV, or twice the length of the line insulator. However, the distance may never be less than 10 feet.

If the crane is in transit with no load and the boom lowered, the clearance required shall be a minimum of 4 feet.
