Handling Materials (General)

The Handling Materials (General) section, based on 1910.176, describes basic requirements that apply to any situation where equipment must be stored.

Where mechanical handling equipment is used, sufficient safe clearance shall be allowed for aisles, at loading docks, through doorways, and whenever turns or passage must be made. Permanent aisles and passageways shall be appropriately marked.

Storage of material shall not create a hazard. All stored materials stacked in tiers shall be stacked, blocked, interlocked, and limited in height so that they are secure against sliding or collapse.

Storage areas shall be kept free from accumulation of materials that constitute hazards from tripping, fire, explosion, or pest harborage. Vegetation control will be exercised when necessary.
