Portable Fire Extinguishers - Selection and Distribution

Extinguishers shall be selected, provided, and distributed for employee use based on the anticipated workplace fire classes and on the size and degree of the hazard which would affect their use.

Extinguishers shall be distributed according to the fire class possible at a location. The fire class dictates maximum travel distances permissible to an extinguisher. The following list provides the fire class and the maximum travel distance to an extinguisher according to 1910.157:
  • Class A - 75 feet
  • Class B - 50 feet
  • Class C - Based on appropriate pattern for existing Class A or B hazards
  • Class D - 75 feet.
