Hazardous
Waste Generators - Laboratory Use

Hazardous waste containers in the laboratory must
be in good condition and always be closed except when it is necessary to add or remove
waste.
Containers collecting hazardous wastes from analytical instrumentation are no exception.
These containers must be labeled and closed (at least tubes, carrying the waste should
enter through a secure plug). Hazardous wastes in the laboratory must be compatible with
the container in which they are stored and other wastes placed in the container.
Additionally wastes stored in the laboratory should be compatible with their environment.
For example:
- Do not place hazardous waste containers on the floor
in high traffic areas where they may accidentally be kicked.
- Do not place hazardous waste containers on a
laboratory bench near or in a sink where they may be accidentally discharged down the
drain.
- Do not place hazardous waste containers near an
oven, burner, or any other source of heat or spark.
Lab managers are encouraged to review the container
management standards under 40 CFR Part 265
Subpart I.
