Classification of Hazardous Waste - Routine Analysis Waste

Process Wastes - HPLC Effluent

HPLC uses effluents with varying polarities as carrier fluids for organic compounds in samples being analyzed. The effluents are typically a mixture of a solvent and water with the percentage of solvent ranging from 20% - 80%. The solvents of choice include methanol, acetonitrile (methylcyanide), acetone and hexane. Occasionally other chemicals are added to the process that may affect the pH of the waste effluent. The type and percentage of solvent used should be compared with the definitions for "F" (Non - Specific Source) waste listed in 40 CFR 261.31 to determine if the waste effluent is a listed hazardous waste. The waste may also meet the hazardous waste criteria for ignitability (D001) or corrosivity (D002).
