Classification of Hazardous Waste - Excess/Unused Chemicals

Excess or expired laboratory reagents may be listed as characteristic hazardous wastes. Remember: first check to see if the waste is listed.

If the sole-active ingredient of the chemical is listed on the P- or U-list, then the discarded chemical is a hazardous waste (acutely hazardous if it's P-listed).

Discarded unused laboratory chemicals cannot fall under the F- or K- listings (with the exception of F027 since it is referenced in the U-list).

If the discarded chemicals are not listed waste, then check to see if they meet one of the four hazardous characteristics.

Do not declare excess chemicals waste until all recycle/reuse options have been evaluated and disposal is found to be the only option. Accumulation time limits discourage advance waste declarations for excess chemicals and reagents.
