A solid waste is a hazardous waste if it exhibits one or more of the characteristics presented below:

Ignitability

Corrosivity

Reactivity

Toxicity

Hazardous waste characteristics were identified because they:
  • Cause or contribute to an increase in mortality or serious illness
  • Present a threat to human health and the environment
  • Can be measured using standard test methods
  • Can be identified through knowledge associated with a generator's operations.

Determination of hazardous characteristics is made either by:

  • Testing
  • Applying knowledge.
