RCRA Exclusions - POTW Discharges

RCRA regulations generally do not apply to waste discharged to a POTW. This exemption is referred to as the "domestic sewage exclusion" ( 40 CFR 261.4(a)(1) ).

If you store hazardous waste prior to discharging it to the POTW, it must be managed as hazardous waste (i.e., it must be labeled "Hazardous Waste"

Remember -- national and local discharge limits prohibit the disposal of certain hazardous materials to the POTW.
