Disposal of laboratory wastes down drains was a common practice in the past and is still employed as a means of waste disposal in many labs.

Most laboratory drains run to a local publically-owned treatment works (POTW). POTWs issue their own discharge limits with which you must adhere. Additionally, there are national limits which apply to laboratory discharges.
