If you are not a Webmaster or Network/Server Administrator and are attempting to install and configure the WBT version of this course to your server, DO NOT follow these instructions. Contact your organization's Webmaster or Network/Server Administrator for assistance.

These instructions are also available in the readme.wri file in this directory.

There are three steps to installing and configuring the WBT version of this course to a server:

  • CERN httpd Server
  • NCSA or Apache Server
  • Netscape Server
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server
  • O'Reilly Website Server
  • NOTE: If you have a problem registering the RealAudio or JavaScript MIME type with your server, consult the User Manual for your server for specific instructions on how to register MIME types.

STEP 1 - Copying and installing the self-extracting file

All of the necessary files and folders for the WBT version of this course have been placed in a single self-extracting file called "s600wbt.exe," located in the "...\wbt" directory on the CD-ROM. There's two methods of installing and extracting the files to your target web server:

    1. Double-clicking on the file s600wbt.exe directly on the CD-ROM using Windows Explorer, or
    2. Copying the file s600wbt.exe from the CD-ROM to the target server, then double-clicking on the file.

You can use either method to install this WBT course to your web server. Extracting the files directly from the CD-ROM installed in a networked PC or a server to a server will require approximately 80Mb of free disk space.

If you decide to use the second method, copying the file to your server then extracting the files, you will need approximately 180Mb of free disk storage space on the web server. After the web files have been successfully extracted to the server the s600wbt.exe file should be deleted.

Whatever method you decide to use, in order to extract the web, find the file s600wbt.exe located in the "..\wbt" folder on the CD-ROM and double-click on this file.

When the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box appears, type in the destination on your PC or server to which you want to files extracted.   If you are extracting directly to a server, this may be different than the example shown below since each server places webs in a unique folder or path. For example, webs installed to a Windows NT server uses the folder\path:

    ..\InetPub\wwwroot\

NOTE: Refer to the User Manual for the server this web is being copied to for a detailed explanation.

After all of the files have been extracted to your web server you should have a new folder called "s600" in your root directory. Underneath this folder will be all of the files and folders necessary to run the WBT version of this course.

Do not move, rename or alter the files or folder structure underneath the "s600" folder since this will affect hyperlinks within the web site. If it is necessary to move this web site to a different location on the web server, the "s600" folder should be moved so all hyperlinked files and folders underneath it will be moved too, and their hyperlinks will not be broken.

In order to start this WBT in your browser, either Netscape 4.x or Internet Explorer 4.x, you must append "/s600/index.htm" to the final server address/location. For example, if the intranet server named "SHEMD-13" is being used to run this WBT, the address/location to open the "Introduction and Configuration" page for this course would be:

This address should be used to hyperlink into this course from another HTML page or as the URL you provide to students to access this course.

STEP 2 - Registering the RealAudio G2 Player MIME type

    Overview

The MIME type for the RealAudio G2 Player is embedded in the HTML of the pages which have an audio component.  In most cases, the MIME type does not have to be registered on the server. If users have downloaded the G2 Player and continue to have problems with the audio from your server, you may need to register the MIME type.

    Information for Webmasters

How you add the MIME type and associate it with the file differ from server to server.  For specific information about your server, please go to the RealAudio web site: http://www.real.com/.

STEP 3 - Registering the JavaScript MIME type

    Overview

In order for your web server to use JavaScript, you must register the MIME content-encoding type for JavaScript on the server. JavaScript's MIME content-encoding type, registered with the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, is application/x-javascript .js. The file types for JavaScript is .js.

    Information for Webmasters

How you add the MIME type and associate it with the file differ from server to server. If you attempt to display a web page containing JavaScript and the MIME type is not set up correctly on the server, your Netscape Navigator browser will display a broken puzzle piece in place of the JavaScript or display a pop-up error message. This section provides the procedure for registering the JavaScript MIME type for the following:

  • CERN httpd Server
  • NCSA or Apache Server
  • Netscape Server
  • Microsoft Internet Information Server
  • O'Reilly Website Server
  • Return to top of page

    CERN httpd Server

How to add the JavaScript MIME type

Perform the following steps to register the JavaScript MIME type:

    Step

    Action

1 Locate the server configuration file. It is usually:

    /etc/httpd.conf

    or

    /usr/etc/httpd.conf

2 Append the following line to the server configuration file:

    AddType .js application/x-javascript binary

3 Make sure the first line of the server configuration file ends with a newline character.
    4 Restart the server.

    NCSA or Apache Server

    Configuration files

NCSA and Apache servers have several configuration files. These files are named:

    • access.conf
    • httpd.conf
    • mime.types
    • srm.conf

Typically, these files are in the directory /var/www/conf or a similar path. The first part of the path (/var/www) may vary depending on your installation, but the configuration files can almost always be found in a subdirectory named conf. To add the Javascript MIME type, you need to edit one of these configuration files. If you can't find the configuration files, type the following UNIX command:

    find / -name mime.types –print

How to add the Javascript MIME type

Perform the following steps to add the Javascript MIME type:

    Step

    Action

1 Edit the file named mime.types and add the following to the end of the file:

    application/x-javascript js

2 Make sure there's a newline character at the end of the file.
    3 Restart the server.

    Apache Server (optional)

If you're running an Apache Server, and you prefer, you can:

    Step

    Action

1 Edit the file named .htaccess, in the same directory as your home page and add the following line to the end of the file:

    AddType application/x-javascript js

2 Make sure there's a newline character at the end of the file.
    3 Restart the server.

    Return to top of page

    Netscape Server

    Configuration files

Servers supplied by Netscape Communications Corporation keep track of their MIME types in the configuration file named mime.types. The configuration file can be found in a subdirectory named config. To add the JavaScript MIME type to your server, you need to edit the mime.types configuration file. If you can't find the configuration file, type the following UNIX command:

    find / -name mime.types –print

How to add the JavaScript MIME type

Perform the following steps to add the JavaScript MIME type:

    Step

    Action

1 Edit the file named mime.types and add the following to the end of the file:

    type=application/x-javascript exts=js

2 Make sure there's a newline character at the end of the file.
    3 Restart the server.

    Microsoft Internet Information Server

How to add the JavaScript MIME type

To register the JavaScript MIME type on a Microsoft Internet Information Server, add the JavaScript file types to the MimeMap key in the Registry by following these steps:

    Step

    Action

1 From Administrative Tools, run the Registry Editor.
2 Display both the keys and values, in the left and right panes.
3 Click on the names of registry keys in the left-hand panel to go to the following location in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\InetInfo\Parameters\MimeMap

4 Click the MimeMap folder icon in the left-hand panel of the registry.
5 The right-hand panel of the registry should display a large number of strings describing MIME types, such as the following:

    text/html,htm,/unused,1 :REG_SZ:
    image/jpeg,jpg,/unused,5 :REG_SZ:
    image/gif,gif,/unused,5 :REG_SZ:

6 The data types of the entries are "REG_SZ," and the values of the entries are blank. The exact details of what the right-hand panel shows aren't important, and may be slightly different from the above example.
7 Add a new entry by selecting Edit/New Value from the menu-bar.
8 A dialog box with two fields appears. Carefully type the string shown below into Value Name field. Do not type any spaces.  (If you make a mistake, you will have to delete your registry entry and add a different one).

    application/x-javascript,js,,5

9 Make sure the pull-down menu field labeled "Data Type:" shows the value REG_SZ.
    10 Press enter.
11 A second dialog box appears, requesting a "Value:" for the registry string. Click "OK." (No value is needed.)
    12 Restart the server.
